Silves is responsible for 40% of Portugal’s citrus production. The municipality wants to show the importance of its sweetest fruit in the new Rota da Laranja.
The Silves Orange Route was presented last week at Quinta de Santo Estêvão. Whether for leisure or business, the project hopes to entertain visitors and show them the secret paths of the Algarve’s orange groves.
“The idea is to offer the most authentic and genuine experience showcasing the values of the territory, a demonstration of what is our heritage, and the use of new technologies to better the experiences of visitors” explained the head of the Council’s Culture, Tourism and Heritage division, Paulo Lourenço.
“Besides the orange tours, we also include production, processing, transformation and consumption”, showcasing wines and other regional products. The Orange Route will also cross paths with the protected marine area of Armação de Pêra and other Nature parks in the region.
The project combines regular production with tourist visits, giving access to tastings, picking fruits and making juice on the spot.
