The city council is adapting the old court building into an Arts and Crafts Centre. The new building will open at the beginning of 2021.
It is an ambitious project that promotes cultural diversification while also rehabilitating the architectonic heritage of the city. Albufeira, one of the most touristic regions in the country, is behind the plan.
The Arts and Crafts Centre will work, in the old court building, as a temporary residency for artisans and artists. It will have an area for exhibitions, another one for training and workshops and another place for local artists to work.
The purpose of the Centre is to create new handicraft companies, inviting visitors to discover the process behind a finished artisanal work. To achieve this goal, the council plans to establish partnerships with other entities of the municipality that already work with handicrafts and other types of art.
The project provides information on traditional handicraft techniques covering all stages throughout the production process, from the idea to the final product, teaching about ancestral techniques and promoting these arts at a touristic level.
The old court has not worked legally for the last 20 years. It is however classified as the heritage of municipal interest and its recovery was already part of a heritage rehabilitation policy in Albufeira’s historic centre.
The municipality is working toward bringing back the identity of the historic centre, for the benefit of locals but also to improve the cultural component to those visiting Albufeira.
