Lagos will have measures to support private lease

Jan 26 2019 Published by under Local News

The City Council of Lagos will move forward with the process of drafting the Regulation to Support Private Leasing, thus putting into practice one of the measures included in the “Housing Program for the Municipality of Lagos 2018-2021/ Programa Habitacional para o Município de Lagos 2018-2021”, approved in December.

The Regulation was born out of the need to diversify housing policies in order to respond to households that, despite not experiencing extreme economic and housing shortages, face great difficulties in paying for private housing rent or even autonomization process.

The Regulation, and the measures already announced by the Municipality, such as the construction of new municipal enterprises , aims to combat the imbalance between demand and housing supply that is registered in the municipality of Lagos, due to the growth of tourism, the reduction of housing for lease and the increase in the values of both the real estate market and rents.

An excerpt from the diagnosis prepared in 2018, where it became clear that “the difficulty of accessing housing is no longer only found in the most vulnerable social strata, although these constitute one of the focal points to which the administration is especially attentive, but also in other segments of the population, among them the youngest, the oldest and also those who seek Lagos to live, work or cement their roots, which they find difficulties in obtaining housing at a value they can afford. “

For the most serious social and economic situations, the Municipality continues to have the Housing Program, which comprises a housing stock of 385 public fires, in which the supported income system is practiced, a response that is expected to be expanded with a further 195 new fires, representing an estimated global investment of 15 million euros, to be phased in by 2021 and geographically deconcentrated.

The Housing Program is based on 5 priority axes and includes a series of measures aimed at boosting the private rental market, encouraging rehabilitation, promoting the construction of new fires of public initiative and the provision of lots for self-construction, as well as implementing other models of management.
