A giant wave left pro surfer Alex Botelho unconscious while competing in the World Surf League Challenge of Nazaré. Luckily, Botelho was rescued and sent to the hospital. Watch the incident here.
Portuguese surfer Alex Botelho had to be rescued from the sea and rushed to the hospital after being involved in a serious accident at the notorious Nazaré big wave surfing spot.
Botelho ran into trouble in a big swell when, after a wipeout, he was rescued by his partner on a jetski. However, once in the rescue vehicle, they were unable to outrun a big wave rushing up behind them.
Both men were sent flying off the jet ski and into the air. Second, after several waves pounded down on them. Botelho was left unconscious and washed towards the shore where rescue crews scrambled from the beach to bring him to safety.
He was immediately put on a spinal board and taken to hospital. He is now stable and conscious and his condition is being monitored.
The organizer of the competition, the World Surf League, said that Botelho “will stay at the hospital for further evaluation”. The entity also issued a “heartfelt thank you to the safety and medical teams for their quick response.”
