Loulé Market redone: works to restore the local market begin

The project is to add restaurants and increase opening times, boosting the market’s relevance in the city.

Works for the restoration of Loulé Market have begun. The approved project will bring to the market four restaurants located at the centre of the structure. It will also expand its opening times, leaving behind the traditional morning hours. After the works, the market will remain open at least until midnight.

As the city of Loulé shows more movement in the mornings due to the commercial activity of the market, it is estimated that the new opening hours will attract people to the city in the afternoon as well, not only to the area surrounding the building but also to other streets in the city centre.

Traditional fish, meat, fruits and vegetables traders in the market will also develop their activity during the afternoon and evening.

Inspired by some Portuguese traditional markets such as the Algés, Campo de Ourique, and Mercado da Ribeira, the municipality expects to reinvent the area, creating a space of commercial activity while also promoting the more traditional Algarve. The contract for the restoration of the market involves an investment of €575,000.
