During the month of May, the Unidade de Saúde Móvel +Proximidade travels through the municipality of Tavira to assess people’s cardiovascular risk, with a special focus on the elderly living in isolated rural areas.
During this period, a doctor and a nurse specialist in community health, from the Agrupamento Central de Centros de Saúde Sotavento, in collaboration with Tavira Municipal Council, will visit the various localities of the municipality in order to identify early pathologies related to the heart and blood vessels.
According to the Administração Regional de Saúde do Algarve, “this is an awareness-raising activity for the population to adopt healthy lifestyles and identify risk factors that are not under control, such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, among others”.
This health diagnosis of brain and cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular risk assessment, which will be carried out free of charge by the Sotavento CAeS team, consists of performing blood glucose tests, measuring blood pressure, calculating body mass index, measuring abdominal perimeter, assessing blood cholesterol, and an electrocardiogram if necessary.
This is one of the ten Unidades de Saúde Móvel acquired as part of a Unidade de Saúde Móvel +Proximity project, co-financed by the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional, under the Programa Operacional CRESC Algarve 2020, which aims to strengthen local health care of the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS) in ten municipalities in the region.
