The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) will reinforce until May 12th the monitoring of the use of mobile phones while driving on roads where there has been a higher rate of accidents.
This operation, called “Smartphone, Smartdrive”, aims to promote the adoption of safer behaviours by drivers and contribute to reducing the risk of accidents.
GNR, in a statement, recalls that the incorrect use of mobile phones or similar devices while driving entails associated risks: visual distraction, motor limitation and cognitive conditioning. Distracted driving is, according to GNR, a risk factor that has been the subject of increasing attention in road safety policies.
The European Commission, in its Action Plan for the next decade (2020-2030), highlighted distracted driving as one of the main risk behaviours for road safety, as well as excessive speed, non-use of a seat belt or helmet and driving under the influence of alcohol or psychotropic substances.
