The value of housing rents in the last semester of 2018 rose 9.3% when compared to the previous year. Lisbon is still the most expensive municipality in the country.
Housing prices keep rising in Portugal. According to the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (National Institute of Statistics). The metropolitan area of Lisbon and the Algarve are the most expensive regions in the country.
It is also worth noting that renting contracts have fallen by 7.9%. This is most likely due to new types short-term rentals, such as AirBnb and local accommodation. The tendency of home-owners to sell the property to foreign buyers with greater purchase power than locals looking to rent is also considered a major factor in the rise of rents.
Between the 308 municipalities analysed, Lisbon presented the higher rent value of the country (11,16 Euro/m2), followed by Cascais (9,71 Euro/m2). As the need for affordable housing grows higher in the capital and in regions were tourism keeps growing, locals are running out of places to live. Citizens living in these areas call for a measure to create affordable housing.
