Approximately 250kg of fuel has been spilt in the Sines’ Container Terminal XXI, in Alentejo.
According to the information from Civil Protection, ”the approximate value of the spill should be around 250kg” said President Nuno Mascarenhas to the Agência Lusa, quoting the latest data available by the Administration of Sines and Algarve Ports (APS). It was previously thought the fuel spilt was of 3 tonnes of hydrocarbons.
According to a statement issued by APS and civil protection of Sines, a “small spill” of fuel occurred in the harbour during bunkering, which is loading fuel in a ship, from the ‘Bahia Tres’ ship to ‘MSC Sandra’.
The note said that after the spill, “barriers were placed for containment and collection of spilt fuel” to “minimise the impact of the incident on port activity”.
President Mascarenhas confirmed to Agência Lusa that the spill was contained “because the contingency means were immediately triggered.”
According to the APS and municipality “cleaning works in the pier are underway”.
