The winds and currents of Levant brought to the shores of Tavira’s beaches waste dredged from the Gilão river.
Citizens from Tavira have pointed out the dredging done in the Gilão river as the main reason for all the waste coming to the sands of the Tavira Island and Tavira’s desert Island.
Docapesca, the public company responsible for the works on the river, denies having any responsibility with the waste coming the beaches through the currents and argues that everything was performed under regulation of the Portuguese Agency for the Environment.
Residents from the region and other environmentalists have presented theirs concerns to the government and the municipality.
Since last month, different sediments, such as burnt wood, tyres, ropes and plastic from decades ago appear on the shores of both Islands. With the winds and currents of Levant this incident has intensified, turning the beaches into real dumps.
Docapesca guarantees that during the dredges a separation of residues took place, controlling the quality of the water as well.
