Lagos celebrates the discovery trips with the 10th edition of the Festival dos Descobrimentos

Apr 30 2019 Published by under What's happening

Lagos will start the month of May with the 10th Festival dos Descobrimentos, a historical recreation program that will animate the city during five days, involving the participation of the school community, the cultural associations of the municipality, cultural and artistic agents and many other entities, natural partners of this organization. For the Municipality this is one of the most emblematic initiatives of the strategy of affirming the positioning, “Lagos dos Descobrimentos”, that aims to capitalize on this historical and cultural legacy.

On May 1st the programme starts with two guided tours. The first one will explain, through the visit to the Caravel Boa Esperança, the technical questions that allowed the discovery trips to take place. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to visit the place where the goods arrived in the town of Lagos in the first half of the 15th century and all the commerce that was generated around it.

“Os 600 anos da descoberta da ilha da Madeira” (The 600th anniversary of the discovery of the island of Madeira) is the main theme, not only in the scientific activities included in the Festival – such as the conference and exhibition to be inaugurated on May 2nd in the Old Town Hall – but also in the many moments of animation that will be presented.

The Historical Parade, on May 3rd, starting at 2:30pm, is the high point of the program, creating a human frame that usually fills the entire Avenida dos Descobrimentos, directing the many hundreds of extras and the public to the fairgrounds, in Praça do Infante and Jardim da Constituição, where for three days there will be music, dance, theatre and fire shows, living statues and street animation.

Do not miss, on Sunday night, May 5th, the opportunity to watch the videommaping show that will be projected on the walls next to the old pier. The film tells us the history of Lagos, inviting the public to travel from the first vestiges of human occupation, through the maritime expansion to the present day.

This is an initiative promoted by Vicentina – Association for the Development of the Southwest, in partnership with the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, Algarve Tourism Region, Municipality of Aljezur, Municipality of Monchique, Municipality of Lagos, Municipality of Silves, Municipality of Vila do Bispo and the Cultural Association LAC – Creative Activities Laboratory.

Creatives from all over the country and Algarvian entrepreneurs together at MAD Popup Market

Apr 30 2019 Published by under What's happening

The street lifestyle markets have been proving to be a success all over the country, allowing the dissemination of original pieces and less massified brands.

It’s in this spirit that the MAD – Moda, Artesanato and Design – arrives in Faro, and it aims to show the business and commercial fabric of the Algarve, as well as the creative personnel and brands that are giving cards in the rest of the country and abroad.

The organizers of MAD Popup Market developed partnerships with the Associação Baixa de Faro, with ACRAL – Associação do Comércio e Serviços da Região do Algarve, as well as with the Faro Avenida Business Center. From this partnerships will be born a digital catalog of the market – MAD Book – to be distributed by these entities and consequently their associates, aiming to foster new businesses and partnerships in the region.

The MAD (Moda, Artesanato e Design) Popup Market, taking place at Fábrica, in Faro, next May 4th, will have free entrance for all those who want to go to the market between 11am and 7pm. Registration for exhibitors closed on April 25th.

This is, without a doubt, another pioneering event that intends not only to put Faro on the national map of Fashion, Handicraft and Design events, but also to promote the city to the invited exhibitors, in commercial and touristic terms.

Hotel Trade Union in the Algarve demands fines for defaulter employers

Apr 29 2019 Published by under Local News

Rest breaks, low salaries and failing to hire enough employees are the reason behind this complaint delivered to the Inspector General of Faro, Teresa Marques.

The Algarve Hotel Trade Union wants the Autoridade para as Condições de Trabalho Employment (ACT), the entity responsible to regulate working conditions, to review the behaviour of employers on the hospitality industry, asking for a “more coercive” attitude against those who do not comply with their obligations to workers.

The union has criticised the lack of support in their fight for more dignified working conditions, and have presented a complaint to the Inspector General of the Algarve, Teresa Marques.

According to the works in the hospitality trade, several employers in the Algarve “do not respect working hours, do not comply with collective contract rules and do not pay for overtime or working on holidays”.

The union also stressed their preoccupation over the health of its workers, as in name of efficiency and reducing costs, conditions in several hotels have deeply worsened.
